Scottish Landscape, Cromarty

John M Crawford

DESCRIPTION

Scottish Landscape, Cromarty by John McKinnon Crawford (1931-2005) presents a scenic landscape of fields along a coastline, with a house in the distance. Thick strokes of paint capture the liveliness of the scene and suggest it may have been a windy day, as smaller flecks of paint representing leaves are angled slightly. Crawford's part in the Scottish Colourist movement is clear with the Post-Impressionist movement of combining bold colours and subjective perspective to evoke emotions within a piece, which he has done here with vibrant colours of green, yellow, and blue in different shades to create depth. The vibrancy of each stroke captures the movement within the scene, allowing the viewer to enter into a windy and cloudy landscape.

ARTIST PROFILE

John McKinnon Crawford, 1931–2005

Crawford was a painter in the Scottish Colourist tradition. Born in Hamilton, Crawford was encouraged into drawing and painting by his artistic mother and teachers at school, so that he went on to study first at Edinburgh College of Art and then at St Martins in London. His subjects were the landscapes and portraits of Scotland, a particular favoured subject being the West Coast and the Hebridean islands. His appointment as art adviser for the Highlands widened his opportunity for travel and painting in Scotland.
